Cesare Franchini – Emergent Phenomena in Quantum Materials
Cesare Franchini studies quantum materials whose properties emerge from the complex interplay of electronic, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom. His research spans polaron physics, strong electronic correlations, unconventional magnetism and multipolar order, electron–phonon interactions, and the electronic and structural properties of complex oxides, surfaces, and interfaces.
To address these problems, his group combines first-principles electronic-structure methods, quantum many-body techniques, and machine learning, developing computational approaches that span multiple length and time scales. Current efforts include Diagrammatic Monte Carlo methods for the nonperturbative description of electron–phonon coupling and polarons, and machine-learned atomistic simulations of charge transport and structural dynamics at finite temperature.
The overarching goal is to uncover the microscopic mechanisms that govern these materials, bridging fundamental many-body physics and realistic materials modelling, and to build predictive computational frameworks for the discovery and design of materials with novel electronic, magnetic, and functional properties.
